Galway and London GAA communities have been plunged into shock after young Gort native Cathal Forde died while training with Kilburn Gaels in Highgate last evening.

The 28 year-old collapsed after a hurling training session last night and was rushed to Whittington Hospital, Archway by ambulance but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The player’s family arrived in London this morning and a statement from Kilburn Gaels was released a short time ago. In it they describe Cathal as a popular and well liked member of the squad who was committed to his hurling and girlfriend.

Cathal, along with his brother Niall, arrived in London three years ago and was a regular fixture in the senior side. The former GMIT student worked as an Engineer in London and his sudden passing will come as shock to the Irish community in London and in his native Gort.

Cathal becomes the fifth GAA player to die in the last twelve months. Ciaran Carr – Dublin, Adrian Harkin – Kilkenny, Jason Morley – Mayo and Michael Costigan – Tipperary, have all passed away.

KILBURN GALES STATEMENT
Is it with great regret that we announce the untimely passing of Cathal Forde who died last night (April 10th) at the age of 28. Cathal was corner back on the Kilburn Gaels team that won the clubs first county title in 2010 and was very popular and well liked with everyone in the club. A native of Gort in County Galway, he came to London just under 3 years ago and has been a regular fixture in the senior side since he came along with his brother Niall. He is a former student of GMIT and was working as a site engineer here in London. Everyone at the club is deeply saddened and shocked by what has happened and our thoughts at this time are with his girlfriend Sheila and the Forde family. Ar dheis de go raibh a anam dilis.
